Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease in which the body
does not produce or
properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar,
starches, and
other food into energy needed for daily life.
The cause of diabetes is a mystery, although both genetics and
environmental factors appear to play a role.
Diabetes
often goes undiagnosed because
many of its symptoms
seem so harmless. 1 in 5 Americans are
at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Nearly 6 million people have diabetes and don?t know it. Are you one of them?
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes
include frequent urination,
unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss,
extreme fatigue and irritability.
Symptoms of type
2 diabetes include any of the type 1 symptoms, frequent infections,
blurred
vision, cuts/bruises that are slow to heal, tingling/numbness
in the hands/feet, and recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections. Often
people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all.
If you have one or more of
these diabetes
symptoms, see your doctor right away. For more information about
